Make Yourself A Priority

What does it take for you to make yourself a priority?

Often it takes a wake-up call, a tragedy or a serious illness that will shake our priorities in place, but I am here to hopefully impress the importance upon you, that waiting for those moments to make yourself a priority, might leave you with scars you may never repair.

I know that we – and that does not just go for women with children, but just about everyone – tend to our imagined, self-imposed, as well as outside-pressured priorities before ourselves. We ignore the pains, the uncomfortable feeling of feeling bloated, a pain here and there, our pale skin, a few strands of hair falling out. We push it to the side, telling ourselves the typical lies, that these are symptoms of getting older, and as we ignore our health and wellbeing, we are slowly burning ourselves out.

Don’t Ignore The Importance Of Self-Care

I am a master at that. I ignored my own thyroid while healing others, I pushed my anemia as something I just have to live with – after all I was diagnosed as a small child – and I ignored the tension and pain in my stomach, that came from a diastasis rectus, that turned into a hernia. I had things to do, people to help, children to teach, and business ventures to salvage. The time for me was limited to occasionally allowing myself to dive into a book, and disappear for an hour, with a cup of coffee in my hand. And those were rare moments.

But, unlike me, you don’t have to wait until you have a goiter, your hair is falling out in groves, and you have to worry about lifting anything, or even sneezing without doing permanent damage. You can stop before you have to go back to your roots, and re-discover health. You can claim health now.

Take Control Of Your Self-Care One Step At A Time

I am not asking you to re-invent your entire life in one week, but rather take a theme, a part of your life, each month, and work on that aspect alone. Begin small – by learning how to eat intuitively, or meditating for 5 minutes each day. Go for a brisk walk, make a weekly appointment to a massage therapist you trust, establish a better evening and sleep routine – just do one thing, starting today.

I found my way back to myself, and even if I am not as healthy as I could be, would I have not stopped making myself a priority, I am happy with my progress. I am no longer only healing others, I am also healing myself.
